Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Well you notice...

I say "final delivery" a few times, not just once. And when I'm giving the talk, I tend to pound on it until the audience looks ready to revolt.

To your question about EQ.

Broad EQ of a few dB (say octave EQ) is probably cool.

Narrowband EQ (1/3 octave) is questionable. More than a few dB is way questionable.

Sharp parametric EQ is just not a good idea.

Now, if your EQ is fixing your room, that's NOT a problem, because it means you're delivering the signal as intended. If you're doing EQ for taste or correction of source material, you're bound for some surprises unless you have a very high coding rate.

Of course, when we did Layer 3, which was "ok" at 128 kb/s and "pretty good" at 192kb/s, we didn't expect people to use it at 64kb/s.

When we did AAC, which is "ok" at 96kb/s and "pretty good" at 128 (although in both cases, 'pretty good was not up to my comfort level), we expected people to try it at 48kb/s, but we didn't have any way to stop them. (grumble)

The various '+' extensions are explicitly non-transparent, and are there to mitigate low rates. You will notice my name is not on that part of those standards, eh?
