What is "sighted"? -- the original deleted Chris F post

What is "sighted"?
------------------------------
Does "sighted" and "blind" merely mean that you can or can't see the item?
I don't think so. I think "sighted" means you know which of the two items
under test is currently being listened to and "blind" means you do not have
that knowledge. If two wines are visibly identical then one may be able to
taste one whole looking at it and still be performing a "blind" test.

That said, I don't see any inherent advantage (relative to the goal of
producing accurate audio observation) of a sighted test over an unsighted
one. I do however see at least a potential advantage of a blind test
versus a sighted one.

Would you agree that there is at least a potential advantage? Or do you
doubt the mere possibility that a sighted test could influence the
observation due to the observers knowledge of the piece in question. In
wine terms (and I'm no wine taster): if someone handed you two glasses of
wine and told you "you have the good one in your left hand and the not so
good one in your right" would that make for a more effective experiment
than merely being handed two glasses in a blind manner?
