Nothing wrong with batteries. The internal construction of most is fairly substantial (heavy) and not prone to some of the same delayed resonance problems that plague almost all electrolytics, especially the modern versions with their extremely thin and brittle, deep drawn aluminum cases, and highly etched plates. And using electrolytics with a battery source (or properly sized choke for that matter) avoids the stresses caused by the extremely large current spikes feeding them from the diode bridge. They still add an unatural edginess in my experience, regardless of the power source, but not nearly as bad with the smoother curent delivery from batteries or chokes.
