Well I agree that of course it is still better in the west than in many other places. The similarity is in Guantamano Bay where the US places people and ignore the Geneva with a change in definition. The US government will take you in if you are a threat and they will kill you if they deem fit (except that you will be in a tagline in an "accident.") The main difference is that we in the west have a much longer leash MUCH MUCH longer leash. They don't care which religion we choose or what car we drive. We are indeed well cared for pets. Stray too far and feel the yank.They have a large amount of middle and upper class living in gated communities because of the false fear they believe is out there. These are merely self imposed prisons.
I agree with you that comparing treatment of some dictatorships is overreaching but fundamentally the power is at the top - whichever word you choose. You have freedom of speach -- speach these days has little power so they are not worried about it. But look WHEN Arthur Miller was writing - not that long ago and J. Edgar Hoover and the gang.
