Well the reason they don;t buy American cars in those countries is because they stink compared to the homegrown stuff - not because of protection.Socialism capitalism and dictatorships have a fine line since, in war, the latter can often be invoked through some wort of Canadian equivelant of the "war measures act" which is exactly what is going on in the US right now. A War on Terror can put the US now in a constant state of "special Powers" and since that war is about as effective as the one on drugs then times have indeed changed.
The word democracy, freedom socialism communism capitalism are merely words with dictionary definitions -- that's great and each have a relatively large umbrella of programs and ideologies - some are shared. Nevertheless, typically socialist financial programs scoffed at so often (and should be when over relied upon) have nevertheless been used by governments who say they don't work.
The lefty notion is to spend your way out of debt and tighten the purse when times are good -- this in fact has always worked always will work and the opposite does not. The depression is a prime example. America was at a very low point and they spent and spent and spent created jobs and infrastructure.
