Actually, IIRC, one of the most vociferous early critics of Bose speakers was none other than the reviled Consumer Reports. It was CR that took Bose speakers to task for their bizarre imaging, noting that guitars sounded like they were 12 feet wide, etc. I think CR also mentioned that the image was not very stable, either.And Bose sued them, too.
I also remember numerous audio salesmen telling me that CR was only good for rating washing machines and hair dryers. I think that Bose would have gladly chimed in. But the Bose criticism showed that the CR people actually listened to the gear, rather than merely taking measurements and reporting a number.
