Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Correct ...

And it either sounds like "you are there" or it don't.
Of course, "there" is a created thing, an "illusion".
Silicon tits are an illusion, though some prefer them to the flat chested alternative ...

I find 901 capable, on movies, of 'enhancing' the illusion.

So far, though I have not moved them, or any equipment/furniture "in their way" I find them lacking in several musical area's, but surprisingly competent in others.

I moved into this home from a small, waterfront apartment.
I was in the near field at the apartment, and when I moved here, I could clearly hear the effects of this much larger room.

This room has a "sound" all it's own, and it took me a long time to get used to it, compared to hearing my speakers in the near field.

Perhaps I have gotten used to the sound of this room, because I have had people tell me my speakers sound great in here, at times.

The 901 really "activates" the room sound, just the exact opposite of my VMPS RM 40's that reduce room interaction.

It is a different sound, to be sure.

I do intend to give 901 the same chance I give every other speaker to perform at it's best here.

That means getting several different amp/preamp combo's, tubes, etc, etc.

I will completely re arrange my room like I did for the big Magnepan MG 3A's.

I will have someone move them a 1/2 inch at a time while I listen.

In other words, they will be "tweaked" within an inch of their lives.

I have NOT ruled out covering the cabinets with felt if I have to, OR damping the driver baskets with rope caulk, etc.

I plan on "having a look" inside the EQ for possible parts swaps too.

With the exception of the VMPS RM 40's, I have been inside every one of my speakers, always looking for ways to possibly improve their performance.

And, I just obtained an electronic crossover to actively Bi Amp the RM 40's, so it too will not "escape" my attention.

I will spend months on a pair of speakers, trying to improve it with parts changes, tweaks, etc, until I become convinced it is the best it can be.

Then .... I sell them, and move on to another project.

I have a ugly old pair of Yamaha NS 200M's, the little brothers of the NS 1000M's with the beryllium tweeters and mids.

The NS 200 was never sold in America, rescued them from a Pawnshop.

I completely re capped em with decent sounding poly caps, and re soldered everything, and cleaned the level pots, and "restored" the damping material.

They sound incredible, ugly as shit though because they are all scratched up, and w/o grills!

But when I sell them, someone who is handy with wood is going to get an incredible speaker, for what I have into them.

My Von Schweikert Vortex Screens are 225 lbs each.

Albert used a VERY low Q woofer in them, because he used them with sub woofers.
They had unbelievable bass quickness, but NO low bass.

So, I looked long and hard for a woofer with exactly the same electrical parameters, that would allow me to seal the boxes.

I finally found an obscure woofer that required minimal crossover tweaking, and now they have that warm, rich, powerful .707 Q that I like, and go pretty deep too.

Of course, I kept the original woofers, so someone can easily restore it to how it was, but they were a prototype anyway.

My 801's have the tweeter coil configured with some added series resistance, and all one has to do is simply jumper it, to return it to stock.

This, BTW, was a recommended B&W mod for the Matrix series 2's, but I took it one step further, and added just a bit of extra resistance.

I TRY and make my mods reversible, in case one wants to hear the speaker as it was.

It is most gratifying to me that in many years of doing this, I have only had a few people reverse my mods, and it could have been equipment/room related, or simply they hear different then I do.

I am very much a student of Dick Olsher, in that I strongly believe that the tweeter capacitor is almost the most important piece of any high end system.
