I have both AR9s and original 901s. I have given my critique and changes I made to both. They sound very much alike now. AR9 has the best bass I ever heard. However, I can't say if the 901 can equal or exceed it because I just don't have enough power. I can clip my 135 wpc Marantz amp easily with the 901 in a small room. At low volume, it's clear the 901s bass can go very very deep. But when the amp clips, it's one god awful noise. I'd bet two to four stacked pairs of original 901s with about 1000 wpc would give AR9 a run for their money. As for the rest of the range, well I've got them sounding very much alike. But the Bose 901 creates a wall of sound unlike anything else I've heard and now that it's a full range accurate speaker, it's excellent. It's hard to choose between them. One day I intend to build a direct reflecting version of AR9. That would be the best of both worlds.
