And if you shunt the 5 ohm filament with a battery? There will be signal current through the battery. :)

In any event, more people than Mark have reported that adding a choke as the last element in a filament supply (L, not LC) results in better sound - a lowering of background grunge as Mark put it. You might theorize that it simply filters out supply noise, but in this case he's using a battery!

Dave's hypothesis is that it helps keep the signal currents where we want them and prevents them from wandering through the filament supply. I don't know if the hypothesis is right or not, but it makes sense and is seems plausible to me.
