That's not the only solution. Consider that the battery could float, serving only to heat the filament. Then, a centertapped resistor across the filament (with the centertap grounded) would become the signal path. Alternately, each side of the filament could be grounded for AC using bypass caps (or both methods could be used together). I don't know how Mark does it, though. That's why I asked.
