I thought this part may not have been clear and in fact I almost rewrote it ... sorry.Try this, it's easier to see. Draw two out of phase 1kHz sine waves containing a equal large amount of 2ndH, one on top of the other. These will look like two identical but opposing egg shaped (distorted) sine waves. The average of the two will be a perfect sine wave where the thin peaks of the first correct the opposite wide peaks of the second.
