Search out a Unity design (by tomservo) if you have a chance - it should be interesting if nothing else (they're pretty rare, though). The co-incident mounting of the mids and compression drivers may well be to your liking, since you seem to be drawn to 'coherence'. Their spatial presentation is still very different than a planar, but although I know I'm imposing my preconceptions on the system, 'coherence' is the term that simply comes back again and again when listening to them. (and it's not just me - others that I've corresponded with use the term as well).
