Ted you are absolutely right- in this case one is a fixed output the other variable. The variable out will differ from its fixed counterpart and will probaly involve an EXTRA potentiometer, some other passive components and an opamp buffer.
Roberto,I supose the cables could be swapped over and if the difference remained on the same output we would know that it had nothing to do with the cable, or if it followed the cable change then...
