Re: Using larger power transformers in low power-draw source components

There are number of issues not addressed in your post. Most low VA rated toroidal transformers have poor regulation spec's vs. a higher VA rated toroidal transformers. Is the power supply configuration in the unit adaptable to this? The next question is what configuration are you using the transformer? does it have a center tap to ground? if so then the current the transformer is rated for is reduced by one half. The next question I have is how well is the transformer doing with the capacitive load of the power supply? Some toroids do O.K. And some don't deal well with the surge currents of the typical capacitive load of the linear power supply. In addition; as a rule of thumb, the transformer rms value should equal to DC voltage out value. Is this the case or not? If you can supply more data I think we may be able to get to the heart of the issue.
