for your post. You asked: "Does it make sense to you that you need transformer that has 50 to 100 times the current you say is required?"
I don't "need" a transformer which has 50 to 100 times the current required ... I merely noted that when I made the change from 30VA to 160VA transformers, I got an improvement in the sound.
As I couldn't understand why this should be so, I posted on Propeller Head in the hope that people with more knowledge than I have and more experience, could provide the answer. That's what I call "seeking knowledge" - and I'm damn sure every textbook I might've read would say "all you need in that situation is a 30VA transformer", because tectbooks are generally about "the norm"/"the theory"/"the expected", whereas the change I made was from left field.
BTW, the current draw IS only 65ma - I measured it - but I'm open to the possibility, as you suggest, that 680uF is not sufficient. So I'll have a look at the ripple on a CRO.
What level ripple would you say is "good" - ie. what level would show that I had sufficient smoothing capacitance??

Andy
