Pretty simple really....

Higher current capacity transformers use heavier gauge wire. With heavier gauge wire, you reduce series resistance. On top of that, the distortion generating characteristics of the transformer are drastically reduced due to the lack of current draw with less potential for core saturation. Lower source impedances with improved linearity / less distortion are always good things and the sonic benefits are obviously audible.

The first ones that i know of to go "gonzo" on a power supply transformer for a low current draw audio circuit were Paul & Stan at PS Audio. They used a transformer capable of several amps of output for what was their PS IV preamp. Their findings were much the same as yours and that's why they went that route. Sean
