Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Some things are easily measured. Some things are not.

I think the major problem with Objectivist AND Subjectivist extremists alike is that there is a time and place for measurements, a time for comparisions, and a time and place for simply LETTING GO and having a BLOODY HUMAN EXPERIENCE for a change.

For example: here is my objective human enjoyment meter.

level 1: A few hair stand up on arms
level 2: many arm hairs become erect, small goosebumps visible
level 3: all arms hairs erect, fair sized goosebumps, tingle in back
level 4: Erect arm and neck hair, large goosebumps, chill in spine
level 5: Level 4, but chills in spine migrate to lower back.
level 6: Level 5, but further chill migration to buttocks (enter Freud)
level 7: 7th heaven - getting personal
level 8: getting the paper towels
level 9: Audio Legend speaks of a man who had level nine once...

Any questions?

So if we hook up electrodes to LYING SUBJECTIVISTS with their EVIL ANTI SCIENCE AGENDAS maybe we can do a sort of audio lie detector test to see if he's "REALLY HEARING A DIFFERENCE". If you think science is going to help someone who picks cables because of the color of the electromagnetic aura they project... you're in for a real religious fight.

C'mon, people now, smile on your brother everybody get together and love one another... right now. Okay.

Frequency response? Measure it.

Noise Floor? Turn up your amp with the source on "stop". Hear hiss from the listening position? Noise floor is too high.

Cables? Not even going there. Use lamp cord if you're an objectivist cable myth debunker. Use mapleshade if you like pancakes.

Soundstage? Well - I've never ever heard of even the most staunch objectivist MEASURE the distance between perceived instrument locations in a soundstage - but now that I have mentioned it, you may be called upon to provide the "correct distance in inches" between instruments if you comment that the "spacing between instruments improved" with that last tweak.

Coupling spikes? Isolator pads? Cable stands? Power cords? oh the list of details details details to be ANXIOUS about goes on ad-infinitum!

The point of my rant is that REAL SCIENTISTS can easily tell when people are playing the placebo effect games, and that you don't approach or make EYE contact with people who have come to believe.

So many objectivist rants about "you can't do this" and "you can't do that" and "that has no validity". Someone likes mapleshade cables. Maybe because mapleshade remindes me... I mean THEM of maplesyrop running lazily over a hot pile of steaming buttermilk pancakes with little melting butter iceburgs floating towards the edge of their flat, round world. And this association with yummy food can cause endorphines to be released and MUSIC TO SOUND BETTER. You can't measure the LCR of this cable and offer PROOF that its yummy golden tan jacket is simply not DELICIOUS...ly good sounding!

Why all the need to convert? Sometimes, I want to show my friends stuff so they too get a Level 6 audio orgasm. Other times, my audio EGO is at work - while I scan the Asylum like a spy-ware program looking for yet another misguided subjectivist theory to debunk.

If you are not listening to good music on some good equipment, or using some good music to listen to some REALLY good equipment, and swapping stuff in and out and involving yourself in audio-tweakery to get just a little bit closer to a level 7... then what ARE you doing? You're either selling stuff and need to "debunk" the competition or you're just another middle-aged pot-bellied under-sexed narcisist that needs to be RIGHT all the time. No wonder your wife doens't CARE that you spend all your time alone in your audio room!

I got two level 5's and a level 6 today - using a CHEAP COMPUTER AND A $125 SOUNDCARD. There are probably lots of measurements and statements about noise at DACs and in DACs and under DACs and jitter this and warble that and RFI from fans and CPUs and power supplies and...

AND WHO CARES? I heard that extra detail today. I am a detail junky and dammit I got MY FIX today.

I only have so many "today's" in my life left. And today was a damn good day.

Cheers,

Presto
