Tom,no, it's not the same thing. John Dunlavy, for instance, made fake cable tests where a cable was "compared" with itself and the listeners heard a difference.
I honestly believe that you hear/heard a difference between your cables but I also think believe that it may well be a product of imagination. At least, that possibility exists and fake tests nicely show that it exists, so you cannot exclude it from the range of reasons for perceived differences.
If you read the passages I quoted from Floyd Toole's AES paper, you will realize that there's more to sound perception than just sound. This paper, btw. is one of the key papers I was mentioning that made me become skeptical as far as sighted listening is concerned.
