It basically comes down to the output impedance of the rectifier tube, the quality of the emission surface, the interaction of a given tubes impedance loaded against a choke or capacitor (or both)and various other factors in the realm of Physics. I personally think that a directly heated/filamentary cathode rectifier like 5U4 and 5R4 sounds much better than indirectly heated, cathode sleeve/filament types like GZ34 and GZ37, with the directly heated types being far punchier with much deeper bass. BTW, I am starting to revise my opinion of the newer hexfreds and other soft recovery diodes; I think I like regular old 25 cent diodes better--- they may have a bit more "glare" in the treble but I think they are punchier and less veiled sounding.
