When I started to hear better amps, the rectifier sonics became quite apparent. I never heard any 5U4 sound better than a Sylvania 5R4GYB smooth black plate. And, for preamps I like the Mullard EZ80. I am also fond of the RCA 5Y3GT smooth black plate. Why the tube rectifier makes a difference, I do not know. Even when using a LCLCLC it is quite apparent. A sonically poor rectifier can mask the performance of a great preamp tube. For example, a Siemens 6922 AO code is not as good as a Raytheon 6CG7 in the same circuit. A poor rectifier can make the Raytheon 6CG7 sound with less quality than the Siemens 6922 using a great rectifier tube. Go figure.
