A few thoughts:1) Admit that we don't know everything.
2) Admit that it's v.v.v.v.v unlikely that anything about audio cables will cause us to rewrite the laws of physics.. (Maxwell's got nothin' ta worry about...)
In other words, everybody has to stop shooting, get out of their trenches, and acknowledge that there is some value to the other perspective.
3) Look for patterns in anecdotal reports of "cable sound" to build hypotheses about what might cause them instead of trying to prove they weren't heard.
4) Design tests to look at the hypotheses, and look for measurements that correlate with the subjective patterns.
Not everything that every audiophile hears is really there, but I am a great believer in looking for repeating themes as indicators of where to look.
5) Pay more attention to the cable as part of a system
Cables don't exist in isolation; we need to understand more about how different cables (particularly interconnects) interact with (and change the behavior of) the equipment to which they are connected. When you include all ground paths in a complete system, and the incoming AC, it starts to look pretty complex.....
6) Get beyond sine waves and consider the time domain.
I believe strongly that we need to test with things other than symmetrical, invariant signals. When I hear live music, even a single drum beat feels like it has a wide bandwidth, asymmetrical waveform. 20Hz - 20kHz sine wave analysis just doesn't feel like it tells the whole story.
And before Steve Eddy reminds me:
7) Realize that the end result -- the response in your brain when you listen to music -- is inherently a subjective experience, so the definition of goodness is ultimately a personal one.
In other words:8) Think more, talk more, listen more and measure more, but jump to conclusions less.
As always, just my $0.02...
