I remember several years back when I had access to some Kimber Cables and some TARA twisted solid core speaker cables. Listening to their different characteristics was most instructive and allowed me to construct my own which had the strengths of both and few of their weaknesses. The Kimber's strongest suit was spectral balance due to its (uninsulated, subject to oxidation) multstranded braided construction with little skin effect, but it fell somewhat short in microdynamics and inner detail. The TARA was strongest in microdynamics and inner detail but lacking in spectral balance with its two twisted (insulated) large gauge solid copper conductors.
As a result, I made my own 8 conductor braided speaker cables using foamed polyethylene insulated solid 14AWG copper conductors which had nearly all the neutrality of the Kimbers (being just a bit dark in the top octave) and all the resolution of the TARA cables. Plus I saved a pile of money. I've been satisfied with this approach, although if I make a second set, I'd use 18AWG instead of 14AWG individual conductors, both to improve the highest octave slightly and to make the cable slightly more manageable since the 14AWG version with its extremely thick insulation (taken from RG-6U coax) wound up being a 1" diameter hose.
