Someone below mentioned an paper by Robert Adams thoroughly describing jitter which sounds like a must read. I have linked a newsgroup reply of his here which brings up a very interesting point about jitter and over/upsampling.

There are a lot of claims that jitter increases with sampling frequency, and this is true... but he makes some very interesting and valid points - the main one being that even though the sampling frequency is increased, the content of the signal is still band limited to 22.05Khz. In this case, the possible amount of change between samples decreases as the oversampling rate increases. This means that the error caused by jitter is reduced linearly with the oversampling factor.

Very interesting indeed.
