Gosh, it's been a while, and the urls that used to discuss some of these things may be gone. However, I recall an analysis of the variable distortions of the pits in commercial Redbook CDs which had a fair amount of random variation in their length, and with the higher rotational speeds of CD and DVD burners, there's probably less of that from which one could reasonably infer that the copy would often sound smoother than the original.

Varying refraction from imperfections and reflections from the edges of a spinning disc can add 'noise' to the transitions of the signal that is picked up from the disc, tending to increase jitter also.
