What you say is very true...

"the effect of both is to increase apparent detail. an engineer proved this to me once by giving me two versions of an orchestral recording - one uncompressed, and the other compressed slightly and my ears always picked up the compressed one as being "better" and containing more detail."

In retrospect, the pop/rock albums (stronger tendendcy there)I have that sound "hot" (ie, where there isn't much contrast between quieter and louder passages) seem to carry more detail...ultimately they become fatiguing and lose some of the thrill of the the music becasue everything becomes, well, monotone (mono-level would describe it better).

ON the other hand Ive heard cuts with too much dynamic contrast and the quiet passages would get lost if you calibrate not too break down the walls during the loud passages...

As for vinyl, one should be content it sounds good if that is the case in general (whihc is my limited experience)...Gee, I even like the compression nightmare taht is radio, but can sound oh so good :-)
