Well, what the various formats are capable of and how they are actually used are two different things.

I have some extremely compressed CDs that have 6 dB or less dynamic range. They sound like crap, and that's being kind. I think many good sounding pop/rock recording have 15-20 dB dynamic range, and I certainly wouldn't say that using all of the dynamic range available in a format is necessarily a good thing.
