I'm not trying to dismiss the shortcomings of digital recording and playback. I'm interested to know what kind of distortion is caused by the cutterhead in the making of an LP lacquer (or metal master).

It seems to me that it would be a very difficult task to take an analog waveform and translate that into mechanical movement, both horizontally and vertically over four frequency decades. It's no simple task to make a dynamic loudspeaker driver that operates at low distortion over its frequency range, and I would think that a cutterhead would be even more difficult since it has to accomplish the same task but with translation in two axes rather than one.
