The transformer up on the pole, from what I recall, is called a one bushing type..meaning, there is only one high voltage isolation bushing up there.. The second connection, which completes the high voltage side is the neutral one, and every coupla poles, the neutral is tied directly to the earth ground..The secondary of the transformer has it's center tap also connected to earth, usually via the same wire as the primary..
Meaning that BY DESIGN, there will be ac currents running through the earth..
If you stick a ac meter probe in the ground, with the other one going all the way back to the telephone pole ground, you will find that there is a voltage potential in the earth..if you take the time, you can make a voltage contour map of your entire property. With this map, you can see the direction the ac current is flowing in the earth by looking for the "steep hills" that typical relief maps show.
These currents are by design...you can't get around them. And they will change direction and intensity depending on the earth's resistance...So, a separate earth ground will most likely set up hum inducing currents, and are best left undone..
Cheers, John
