Actually, I had already read your post.

I recently had a problem which I had to solve using a similar method. I put a new DIY pre-amp into service. Everything I plugged into it (FM tuner, CD player) sounded great and I had extremely low levels of hum/hiss except ... for my external phono stage.

Used with my previous pre-amp, this also had a low level of hum but, with my new pre-amp, I got an unacceptably loud hum - which made enjoyment of vinyl impossible!

All enclosures in my system are grounded to mains earth (in Oz we have 3-prong wall sockets) and the solution to this hum problem was to connect the star earth on the phono stage PCB to chassis earth!

What I would do, if I was using battery power supplies, would be to continue to have the chassis grounded at the wall socket - ie. use a 1-core mains plug!
