As you can see from the above diagram, the neutral side of power supply is grounded [to earth], and this grounding is maintained thru out the components even after the AC is converted to DC. This is especially is true of two prong electrical components.
As you can see, the negative is grounded even after the AC-to-DC conversion.

So theoretically, noise generated within system will see short to ground, and prevent it from going thru the power supply back into the system again. This concept is same as when tall buildings are grounded to route away lightning to ground rather than building's electrical system, or when the shield of coax cable is grounded (preferably to a rod in ground) in communication systems to route away noise to ground.

In a battery operated system, the ground advantage is not there unless the negative side of the battery is connected to system's ground also, which in turn connected to earth's ground :)
