I have been reading few web site (like the one below) about grounding in A/V systems, and most of them came to the same conclusion that adding an extra ground (such as ground rod) might indeed create problem with ground potential cross the system, leading to ground loops and other problems.But despite of above fact, one still can not take away the benefits and shielding capability of earth grounding against noise and interference. One just have to know how to harness it right with out creating any more problems.
BTW Steve: I don't know if Henry Ott's book deal exclusively with A/V system or not, but to find out more about benefits of earth grounding and its shielding capability against noise, one have to look into communication and antenna handbook to find out more about it. It is a fact, and covered extensively :)
