Re: You have to use them before you dismiss them -- thinking about how they work doesn't count!

Richard,

Your suggestion that I seem to be moving toward the thinking (objectivist) side of audio is actually a bit humourous. I've stated before that I started out as an Objectivist-based young music lover.

There was a time when I believed wires couldn't possibly sound different and tubed equipment had to be an inferior to modern solid state. You guys just never believed me because as a fairly open minded individual I eventually listened to wires and heard they made a significant improvement, not everytime with every wire mind you, but the potential was there! Then I listened to tubes and once again I heard a significant improvement. But just like with wires it wasn't everytime with every tubed amp, but the potential was there also!

Not all wires improve the "sound" of a given system everytime, but the right wires will. Not all tubed amps are better than solid state amps, but the best tubed amps are the SOTA in audio amplification, at least in my opinion that's the way it is.

I remember when I was about 20 years old I went and visited a Hartley speaker representative in Storrs, Connecticut IIRC. He played an all Hartley speaker system, which used the Hartley 24" Super-Woofers! This was one of my first exposures to good tubed equipment he was using an Acoustic Research amp/preamp. During our listening session he placed a VPI "Magic Brick" on the transformers of the amp and asked if I heard a difference.

I honestly responded nope, no difference. Leo Oxley said lets listen for awhile and see what happens. After maybe 20mins passed Leo asked me once again if I heard any differences and once again I replied nope, no difference. At that Leo said something like if you cannot hear the difference I might as well remove the "Magic Brick" and BAM! The moment he removed that damned "Magic Brick" the sound got duller and blurred. Leo just smiled, I imagined he done that little stunt before. It appears that what the VPI did, it did very sllllooowwwlly. Something definitely was happening here-- absorbed stray magnetic fields? damped the transformers? I don't know what they did, but it happened so slowly I could only notice what they did when they were abruptly removed! That's one tweak that really amazed me. I still don't know what they did, but they damn sure did it!

I'm still skeptical on a lot of different tweaks, but try to keep an open-mind on things. Some things however are just too far fetched for me to believe and I'd have to be shown that they work. That would require my seeing them installed and then my actually hearing a significant improvement. Otherwise you can keep that tweak.
