Yes you are right in the sense that the sound added is not originally in the signal. I also don't think they are trying to replicate the same overtones that were lost just put new ones there that the brain recognizes as overtones. Perhaps they have found that it is not critical which frequecies are involved in the upper registers because discrimination is so poor there?? So adding something of a regular pattern that the brain recognizes is a good surrogate for what was lost?
