Well the fact that they resonate in the audible range is at least some evidence they could do something even if the rest is ultrasonic. Likewise, there at least exists some evidence that we can sense ultrasonic frequencies, perhaps through IM with other frequencies. It is quite different from noise or random distortion because it is harmonic and may be recognized by the brain as such. Now I have heard a demo and I didn't really hear anything reliably but that doesn't mean there is NO explanation for how they might work.
