My wife had accepted speakers of 40x45x110 cm (16x18x44 inch). However, she was more than happy to learn that my speaker-to-be (same footprint) were/are only 75 cm (29 inch) high.The only what is size related is bass, the deeper, the bigger. Unless you go active, for the same performance it reduces the size by a considerable amount and increases WAF by about the same amount.
So I went active, I have all the bass I want and my wife's happy.
