Never claimed that they did.

AFAIK, no-one has published work demonstrating audible differences between boxes of gain under the usual restrictive conditions (no clipping, level and EQ match better than 0.1dB, etc, etc) under any sort of blind conditions, ABX or otherwise. If you've done experiments showing such, you really ought to write them up in detail and publish them so that they can be replicated. It would be a bombshell and a really important piece of work.
