I judge several events every year in California and France, do wine sensory analysis for a living, and have a few comments to make:1. Analytical wine tasting is ALWAYS done blind. No whining, no excuses.
2. People aspiring to Master Sommelier or Master of Wine are tested blind. They pass these tests.
3. The nature of wines given medals in judging (also always done blind) is very dependent on which competition you're talking about; the choice of judges determines the style that the competition favors. If you prefer more subtle, laid-back wines, go for Riverside medalists. If you like 'em bolder, go OC.
4. Palate fatigue is indeed an issue in mass slaughter competitions. But that doesn't obviate the main difference between wine tasting and audio- in wine tasting, if you can't tell the difference between wine A and wine B with the labels covered, then no amount of whining, excuses, attacks on blind tasting, bad analogies, ad hom, recitation of urban legends about Coke and Pepsi, and backpedalling your mistakes will give you any credibility whatever. That sort of bs is just not taken seriously.
