a co worker has a Pentium M Dell - it has a fan, too. Not sure if it runs all the time, but if there's a fan it will run.Not as loud as the 3.2gHz thing I have, but then it's also dog slow compared to it. That little secret of the M chip - it ain't a fast computer. All a matter of battery life over performance, which matters to most users more than raw speed. Too bad I have to encode live video with my laptops :(
Also - quiet is not silent. Even ignoring the fan noise, it still makes noise as long as the hard drive spins next to me here.
Anyway - nothing beats absolute silence from your sources, but depending on where you locate them, that little bit of noise coming from them may be inaudible. Problem with laptops is that they end up right next to you usually, and then you can hear most of them. I tried to have my HD fall asleep while running the music via the network from the server, but the moment you touch that keyboard to go to a different track, the thing wakes up again...
