I am a bit confused as to how a laptop will solve the issue. Sure, it can fit in the rack, but how are you going to connect it to the audio system? - actually a laptop already HAS solved my problem, it's in my audio rack (top shelf), and is connected to my USB dac by a single USB cable - that's it - job complete! In fact my entire system can now fit in a breadbox - my laptop, my USB dac, my Quad 303 amp, and my Creek OBH12 pre - easily in a single breadbox with room enough for a loaf of bread. The USB dac is also my tuner courtesy itunes. Desktops may look like audio components and fit in racks, but they need monitors, keyboards, and mice - no room in my rack, the laptop gets one shelf and that's it. My entire system is hidden from view - only the Quads are visible.I need a laptop because I browse through my collection onscreen to decide what I'm in the mood for, choose to add/remove internet radio stations to my radio presets, cruise the itunes music store and preview albums (it lets you play the first 30 seconds of each song on ablums), etc etc etc. Plus I can use the Burwen software if they make future releases, try different audio players like foobar or the undending stream of them that are out there, software addons, WMP plugins, etc etc etc etc etc (although I haven't yet, I'm perfectly happy as is)
My only problem is my current laptop is slowish, has run out of disk space, and has no firewire. I'm going to put in a modern laptop with plenty of RAM, hook up my little USB cable to my Bobcat, and probably an external firewire based massive hard disk so I won't run out of disk space until my CD collection at least triples (will take years for that to happen). Maybe a USB based external hard drive wouldn't interfere with the USB transmission to the DAC, but from everything I read about firewire, I figure why not have a separate channel for it and leave USB to the DAC, many laptops have firewire and many external drives support it.
