Re: Sweet - and small!

I have yet to see a Dell laptop that doesn't come with a fan. I have three here and no matter what I do, you can't turn that thing off.

one of these coupon Dells comes with a dual core processor - there's no way that baby is going to run without a fan... Hard to find info on noise level anywhere at Dell - seems like something they prefer to keep quiet about :) The PSU puts out 65 watts - not sure where all the power goes, but something is bound to get warm with that type of power consumption.

I've lived with an Inspiron 8500 3.2gHz machine as my main source for a while and after that there's no way I will even consider another laptop in my listening area. The sound of even the hard drive is clearly audible unless you hide the thing in a corner next to a bass trap and a wall absorber panel a few feet away from your body (which defeats the purpose of some of the computer playback benefits).

My solution is a computer in the basement, controlled via a KVM extender (monitor and keyboard/mouse via cat5 in listening area, rest downstairs). That way I have no real issues with noise from the computer, save a lot of time and money trying to silence the PC, especially since I want a fast PC to run DRC. The KVM extender is not cheap, but I have a dead silent listening room that way.

Just a thought...

Peter
