I am a bit confused as to how a laptop will solve the issue. Sure, it can fit in the rack, but how are you going to connect it to the audio system?

ANyhow, there are fanless "desktops" that will fit in a rack, and look like an audio component. The hush will take the 1gig you desire, and can fit a 300gig hard drive to boot. Look at www.logicsupply.com under fanless.

Now for control. I have heard of people using PDAs for wireles control, and software that mimics a desk top.

I love my viewsonic Airpanel. Basically a wireless monitor. Anyhow, I think they are still making these things, and might be an option.

IMM, control is the bigger issue than silent operation.
