Interesting

And if you absolutely must use Windows XP you now can - as of today - on the Intel Macs I really despise Microsoft (and I didn't always, I was around in the days when IBM ruled the world) - but unfortunately I do have to use Windows because this laptop will be an emergency backup to my work computer, which means it must have installed all the software I need to work.

Does that mean that you don't have to use Windows XP and can use a Mac and iTunes? Well, what I can say for sure is I can use itunes on my PC with the Bobcat, and do every day for internet radio channel surfing. I can also say that it was recognized as a "USB DAC" by windows without installing any of the Burwen software and worked fine and sounded great, so maybe it would do likewise on the Mac.

Regarding your comparison, yes it's hard to say what contributes to improvements and/or differences between one DAC and another, for all I know the USB interface has nothing to do with my love for the Bobcat - who knows? But I do like the idea of at least eliminating 1/2 the problem with a bit-perfect rip to hard drive, not to mention the convenience of a PC (once you get your system settled).

One thing I should always mention when I espouse my love for my DAC is that with it came digital EQ to match my system to my room - that is bar none the biggest improvement I've ever experienced, be it with the EQ in WMP or itunes or my outboard Behringer DEQ2496 - my whole audio life to this point was a waste of time I feel, and I only wish I could have heard the bazillion of components in my past with my room EQ'd as it is now - no comparison, and order of magnitude improvement to my whole system. Did I say waste of time? I meant, waste of money!!!
