Yes, my rack is far removed from my seating position - but I don't ever have to run over and "change anything" - I choose an album, press play, and plant myself on my listening sofa. No different than using a CD player in any way really.I have a logitech media mouse which has specific buttons for volume up/down and song skip (works with both itunes and Windows Media Player) so everything I need is controlled by the remote control as far as listening to an ablum, a playlist, or surfing radio stations is concerned.
But adding stations to presets, making new playlists, surfing the itunes music store, etc - that's all done at the laptop of course, for which I need keyboard, mouse, monitor. The cool thing about previewing albums using the itunes music store is that once I find an album to preview while at my equipment rack, I can still sit in my listening couch and use the remote control to flip through the songs to evaluate the sound quality (yes it's good enough to tell what the CD would sound like if purchased)
Indeed, a quiet external HD will be a challenge and is essential...
