I, too, have owned both for a little over 5 years (MP-1/M60s)and have run strictly balanced for that period except on two occasions when a friend who is designing his own flea powered SETs brought them over to test on my 102db sensitive speakers. This required concocting an XLR to RCA adapter for input to the amps. The end result was undesirable levels of steady state hum. Incidentally, my preamp to amp cables are 10 meters long. I do not feel the gear was in any way directly responsible for the hum BTW. Probably a ground loop that became amplified upon defeating the XLR connection or something similar.I realize this is not the same thing as using the RCA outs from the preamp but I decided to chime in anyway.
Also, if I may, I would like to take a moment to throw a special shoutout to Ralph and the whole gang at Atma-sphere for the exceptional service they recently provided for my MP-1. The best sound, friendly, competent service...why would you look anywhere else?
