Re: What are CDs?

Jeff,

I take it that you're not overly fond of digital music recordings? Or is it just the CD, as opposed to other digital sources?

I think the CD got a bad reputation, early in its history, because of the irresponsible way in which its huge dynamic range was over-utilized by recording technicians. There are certainly some poor recordings on CD but I've heard some good ones, too. For instance, I have a CD of Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony that sounds wonderful; on the other hand, I also have a CD of Beethoven's 7th sypmhony that sounds downright ugly. The quality varies so much but it does seem to be reasonably consistent within the same brand.

However, there have been some pretty awful vinyl recordings. I have to admit that, in my experience, the poor quality CDs are far worse than the poor quality vinyls. As to whether the best CDs are as good as the best vinyls, I am in no position to judge.
