There are a number of benefits to an input transformer.

First, it provides ground isolation between the preamp (or power amp as the case may be) and the component that's feeding it, eliminating noise caused by ground loops and interchassis currents.

Second, it provides outstanding common-mode noise rejection. And the interesting thing about transformers is that they can provide outstanding common-mode noise rejection even when they're being fed from unbalanced sources.

Third, it can be fed equally from balanced or unbalanced sources without any additional circuitry, jumpers, etc.
