You'll see in another post that I retracted my overly aggressive response to David.However, I stand by the fact that the original quote was correct; I believe that Bell Labs identified all of those things as contributing factors in signal transmission.
The tough thing about audio is the threshold of "what makes a difference"
Compared to telephone transmission, audio systems are many orders of magnitude more demanding, or more resolving, so it seems reasonable to me that things that may have a gross effect at 1000m may still have an audible effect at 1m.
