There is a whole lot of difference when you run cable for 100 ft. or less, vs 100 kilometers. Seriously; JN and DH have made many good points, and the research done by Bell Labs is always to be taken seriously. Of course the application for which it was written is also very important.
If I remember correctly, typical distortion on a telephone line is about 10% THD. I really don't think we can lay the blame for that on wire.
