And Argument by Assertion...

Two of my favorites!

Thanks for the skillful dissection of #2 in that mendacious litany called The Seven Warning Signs' of Bogus Science -- posted by Fairy Tale, ironically. I think you nailed it, why the Defenders of the Faith must resort to ridicule.

Now if I may take a quick stab at #3: "The scientific effect involved is always at the very limit of detection. Alas, there is never a clear photograph of a flying saucer..." Argument by assertion! There are of course numerous photographs of varying clarity, but by stating there are *none* the writer is able to discard the phenomenon. But even should he be presented with some to his face, he will always raise the bar: "You call these clear?" Finally, what could be clearer than the photos of the mysterious Crop Circles, yet look how the scoffers and scorners and mockers do behave.
