It's rather difficult to pick up the lower intensity stars when the camera optics are set for the higher intensity, close up images.. I don't know what type of film they used, but I can see losing the stars as a result of F-stop..They may have even had to use lower sensitivity film because of the background radiation, but I guess on that..

And given the level of involvement that would be necessary to fake all the pics, I can't believe everybody would forget the stars...For goodness sake, even the old flash gordon flicks had stars..
